In Loving Memory of Mr. Ralph Labruna Lincoln Middle School extends its deepest condolences to the Labruna family at the loss of a truly extraordinary individual, Mr. Ralph Labruna. Mr. Labruna was more than just a custodian; he was a dedicated and multitalented member of our school community. He served Lincoln School until his retirement in 2022, following a tenure at Washington School. Mr. Labruna's talents knew no bounds. He was also a professional painter and a published author. His book, "Walking in the Shadow of Death: The Story of a Vietnam Infantry Soldier," provided profound insights into his experiences as a soldier in Vietnam. Many of us had the privilege of hearing Mr. Labruna speak about these firsthand experiences, leaving a lasting impact on our hearts and minds. Mr. Labruna's warmth and kindness endeared him to everyone he encountered. Head Custodian Mike Sullivan fondly remembers him as a "loveable guy" and a "caring person" who would go above and beyond to help others. He was not just a colleague but a dear friend to many. Custodian David McLaren added, "He was a good friend; he was always there for you." Mr. Sullivan also acknowledged Ralph's remarkable skills as a painter, which played a vital role in the beautification of Lincoln School. In addition to his professional talents, Mr. Labruna was a devoted family man. He tried never to miss a single sports game of his grandchildren and, alongside his wife, played an active role in their lives. He loved to talk about his family with Lincoln staff. Ralph's kindness extended to the entire custodial team. Once a month every month, he would buy and bring breakfast for all the day custodians, a simple gesture that spoke volumes about his caring nature. His culinary skills were legendary, and he occasionally made homemade lunches for the custodial staff to brighten workdays. "He was always cooking," Mr. Sullivan fondly recalled. In Vietnam, Ralph Labruna earned the nickname "Lucky Labruna," but we at Lincoln School were the fortunate ones to have our lives enriched by his presence. His legacy lives on in the memories of those he met, and his kindness and talents will be sorely missed. Ralph Labruna led a remarkable life, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts and school.

LMS: This week in Ms. Kennedy and Ms. Smeragliuolo's 7th-grade science class, our students delved into the world of experimentation! One experiment involved observing the effects of flame on a beaker, exploring principles of heat and energy transfer. The other had students mixing different substances in test tubes with water to discover varying reactions. A hands-on approach to ignite the scientific curiosity in our young minds! 🧪

Happy Mindfulness Monday from LMS! As we welcome a new week, we'd like to introduce you to Abigail, a brand-new seventh-grader at Lincoln Middle School. Her radiant smile captures the essence of today's quote from Helen Keller: “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement; nothing can be done without hope.” May Abigail's smile and Helen Keller's wisdom inspire us all to approach life with hope and optimism.

Today we spotlight Mr. Valera, a devoted educator at Lincoln Middle School. Celebrating an extraordinary 21-year tenure with the Kearny School District, he enriches lives by teaching English as a Second Language. Outside of the classroom, Mr. Valera builds a sense of community as he leads both the Board Game and Anime Clubs. In the early days of the 2020 pandemic, he extended his compassion globally by 3D-printing face shields and distributing them at no cost to healthcare workers as far away as South America, Europe, and Australia. His generous heart and genuine love for his students make him an invaluable asset to our Lincoln Middle School family. With the steadfast support of his wife Nicole, son Lucas, and their puppy Loki, Mr. Valera stands as a beacon of compassion and dedication.
