Schuyler School - Special thanks to Ms. Liu for sharing her culture with us to help celebrate the Chinese New Year! Lunar New Year (also called “Chinese New Year” and “Spring Festival” ) is the biggest and most important holiday of the year in many Asian countries, including China, Vietnam, and Korea. There are many traditional activities associated with it, and many of these symbolize new life, new beginnings, and good luck. The color red is seen everywhere on Lunar New Year because it represents fire, which can drive away bad luck, according to legend. Yellow (or gold) is also an important color at this time. It represents wealth and good fortune. Decorating the home in these colors is a common custom. Chinese children receive red envelopes containing “lucky money.” The dragon and the lion are other popular symbols of the Lunar New Year. Many Chinese communities around the world celebrate with dragon and lion dances and parades through the streets with people dressed in brightly colored costumes. The celebrations often continue until the Festival of Lanterns, which is on the 15th day of the Lunar New Year.

Schuyler School - Our Grade 3 ESL/Science class, students are currently learning about inherited traits and learned behaviors in animals. As a way to bring the lesson to life, students celebrated the Lunar New Year by gathering information from the internet and generated a list of traits that each of the 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac have. Then they classified the information as being either Inherited Traits or Learned Behaviors.
