This week, our Intro to Law students conducted their first Mock Trial of the year, researching and carrying out the Mock Trial case of the State of NJ v. Charlie Quinn. Each student was given a specific role to play to create a vivid and accurate depiction of a criminal trial. Each student performed his or her roles and duties masterfully, creating an environment that mimicked what a true courtroom would be like. We are proud of the work that they put into their roles, and they had an incredibly fun time acting out the trial. A big thank you to all the faculty and administrators who helped to facilitate this experience for our KHS upperclassmen!

The NJ Elks Peer Leadership Conference brought together over 470 NJ Students . The NJ Elks objectives are to increase participant's ability to make healthy decisions for themselves, and to assist their peers in doing the same. The Conference provides peer leaders with specific tools and resources to implement action plans in their communities, thus creating a network with the ability to educate their peer groups, schools, and communities on the skills learned at the conference. The conference gives participants knowledge and information that promotes wellness.
Our Students had the opportunity to listen to amazing speakers such as Craig Jandoli, Tim Shoemaker, Kyle Wilkom, Erin Pompa, Patrick Perez, Mike Smith and Gian Paul Gonzalez. They took part in breakout sessions and worked together with their Peers to find ways that they can implement these programs in our own communities. This three day conference illustrated that everyone is unique, everyone has challenges and it is okay to ask for help. Overall, this program affected each student that attended and helped them gather skills to become their best self.

Congratulations to Haley Felix for an outstanding performance at this year’s NJ Poetry Out Loud Region 6 competition: Hudson, Bergen, Passaic Counties.
Haley made it to the third and final round and did an amazing job reciting her three poems. Her hard work and dedication to this unique opportunity landed her a spot in the top ten. This was no small feat as the NJ P.O.L. representative pointed out that this year’s competition was a tight race and the most talented she had seen in her five years of holding the position. One of the judges was originally from Kearny and she made sure to go up to Haley and let her know that she did a great job representing Kearny High School. We are very proud of Haley and all of the students that participated in poetry Out Loud’s special 250th Americana themed competition this year.

Kearny High School had an assembly and hosted renowned national speaker Stephen Hill, who spoke to the KHs students and staff on substance abuse. Mental health and share his inspiring comeback story.
This meaningful event would not have been possible without the support of Cheryl Stavola of the Tigger Stavola Foundation. Cheryl is the aunt of Tigger Stavola, who tragically died from an opioid overdose at the age of 25. Inspired by this devastating loss. Cheryl founded the Tigger Stavola Foundation to raise awareness about drug addiction and to provide drug prevention education to schools. They grateful for the opportunity to bring this important message to our students.
