Last Tuesday, KHS Broadcasting students were invited to Univision's TV Studio and Radio Station in Teaneck for a tour of the facility. Students were given a behind the scenes look at the control room, various stages of production, and both studios.
They were also given a shoutout live on the radio by the DJ and received the opportunity to watch a live newscast.
Students were inspired when they identified similarities between their production process and the equipment at Univision and their own coursework here at KHS. The students produced a full recap of their exciting trip, linked below. Thank you to Superintendent Encarnacao for setting up this incredible visit.

Ms Murray at Franklin School worked with Ms. Donnelly and her Ceramic students. Ms Murray’s Pre-K class drew pictures of monsters and the ceramic students made each child a 3D ceramic piece. Mrs. Astrella and Dr. Cali visited the room while Ms. Murray unwrapped the monsters. Mrs. Astrella read a monster story to the class!
The Pre-K class was so excited and got to take their monsters home today. It was a great day!

The KHS French Club went on a memorable field trip to the MET Museum in New York on the 80th anniversary of D-Day in Normandie. Some of the highlights included French and other European artworks from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Impressionist periods. Students came up-close and in-person with the works of Monet, Manet, Renoir, Rodin, and Courbet, among others. One student poignantly remarked of Renoir's paintings as being "both abstract and realistic at the same time." French Decorative Arts included a bedroom from Louis IX at Versailles and the reception room of a Parisian hotel.
The students created lasting memories as they stepped back into history and felt the impact of hundreds of years of art as an expression of the shared human experience. Following their museum tour, students had lunch at Tartinery Columbus Circle, a French Café where they had a chance to try new flavors and discover the French flair for cuisine.
A significant current exhibition at the MET afforded the club an opportunity to explore an interdisciplinary lesson on the historical impact of slavery and racism in the United States. Students learned the background story of Bélizaire and the Frey Children and were able to continue the discussion and conversation with their history teacher at KHS the following day:
"Bélizaire and the Frey Children is a rare American portrait of an enslaved Black subject depicted with the family of his enslaver. Attributed to the leading French émigré portraitist working in 1830s–50s New Orleans, the painting illuminates the complex relationships of intimacy and inhumanity that defined domestic enslavement. The portrait’s later history also reveals the consequential afterlives of slavery. At the turn of the twentieth century, the prominent depiction of the enslaved Afro-Creole teenager, Bélizaire (ca. 1822–after 1860), who is positioned against a Louisiana landscape above the three young Frey siblings presumably in his care, was deliberately concealed—likely by a member of the Frey family. His figure was only revealed after a careful conservation treatment. Archival research has also recovered the identities and some of the histories of all four subjects. Bélizaire survived the Civil War and lived to experience freedom. Both Frey sisters died the same year the portrait was painted, their brother some nine years later."
