KHS:
Last week Mr. Vegas physics students were challenged to design a container that would be able to keep a chicken egg intact after a fall from 1 meter, 2 meters, and finally from the 4th floor window. This was part of a unit on the momentum-impulse theorem and applications of Newton's Laws. Students did research and then built designs within the limited supply constraints: 10 sheets of computer paper, 10 popsicle sticks, 1 m of string and 1 m of tape.
Almost all the groups made it through the 1 meter drop, and more than half were successful at 2 meters. But in the end only three groups managed to survive the drop from the fourth floor window. Giselle Giron Cholotio built a container with a parachute similar to ones used in military air drops. Litzy Rosas and Ricardo Guitierrez used reinforced padding similar to a Mars lander, and Emrah Jadic built a lightweight pyramidal structure that emulated the crumple zones of a car.

Thank you Mr. Vega!

🦷🌟This past Saturday, five of Mrs. Marsh’s Dental I students volunteered to participate in the 91st Annual New Jersey Dental Assisting session in New Brunswick. The students had the opportunity to ask questions and take notes in two continuing education courses, representing the enthusiasm and professionalism of our Kearny student community. The students shared smiles all around as Mrs. Marsh was installed as Vice President of the New Jersey Dental Assisting Association. Congratulations to Mrs. Marsh and kudos to our kids for participating in such a prestigious event.

In recognition of National School Principal's Day, we would like to express our gratitude to each of our school principals: Mr. Brack, Dr. Cali, Mr. Hempel, Mrs. Iacono, Dr. Masters, Mr. Moyano, and Mr. Zimmerman. Your dedication to our students, families, and staff is valued and appreciated. Thank you for all you do for our school community!

On Friday April 19, KHS students visited the Pequest Trout Hatchery in Oxford, NJ. Students toured the facility, learned about the rainbow trout that are raised on site and then stocked in public waters across the state. In addition to a tour of the facility, raceways (concrete holding tanks) and nursery, students learned how to cast and fish on site at the hatchery’s educational pond. Students learned about fishing, forestry and natural resources and it was an educational and recreational fun day!

The SAVE Club at KHS is doing their part for Action for Earth NJ, this week and every week, by participating in Earth-friendly activities, demonstrating that little changes can yield big results. These dedicated students work on two certified wildlife gardens, participate in composting, are engaged in Project Feeder Watch, which entails observing bird feeders and tracking bird species data into the Cornell Labs website, complete cleanups on the sidewalks of the high school perimeter, and started worm farming this week. 🐤🌳🌎

KHS extends sincere gratitude to our administration, counselors and staff for their efforts in organizing an outstanding Take Your Child to Work Day. Our children had a blast interacting with our work families, made some great memories, and cherished the experience.

At Kearny High School, our kids reveled in the opportunity to learn about different career paths, from making thumbprint molds and learning about dental health, to baking cookies and learning about kitchen safety. Thank you Mrs. Marsh and Mrs. Barone for exciting crafts, activities, and of course - cookies!

Obstacle courses, hula hoops, relay races, and a quick pick-up game made the KHS gymnasium the place to be, as our superstars bonded with team building activities.

Our future engineers got to make 3D keychains in Mrs. Larossa's class, while our aspiring news anchors practiced with Mr. Miller's green screen!

We got the beat! 🎶🥁🪘Our KHS kiddos are having a blast, learning about musical instruments and making memories!

It's Bring Your Child to Work Day, and the fun is in full swing at KHS!! From baking cookies to relay races and green screen magic, stay tuned for more family updates!

KHS students in our accounting and business classes attended a two day workshop at Deloitte, one of the big four accounting firms, in Morristown. Students participated in hands-on workshops where they learned about Deloitte, opportunities that exist in the field of accounting, personal finance topics and college and career readiness. Students also toured their office space and had a question and answer session with a panel of 5 Deloitte employees. Two of the Deloitte employees were 1998 graduates of Kearny High School: Erin Abreau, partner, and Michelle Silva, audit partner, who both took our college prep accounting class while they were in KHS. Students enjoyed their time learning about opportunities that exist within accounting and hearing from these professionals.

Mrs. Macedo and Ms. Medina’s students celebrated Shakespeare’s birthday April 23rd. The students wrote and decorated birthday cards using Shakespeare’s language. They generated their own Shakespearean insults and deciphered whether quotes were attributed to Shakespeare or to a celebrity singer.
