The KHS Concert Band has recently achieved the prestigious ranking of Top Honors at the Hudson County Alliance of Teen Arts, a remarkable accomplishment that places us among the top three bands in the entire Hudson County. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as it marks the first time in our knowledge that the KHS Concert Band has received such an honor.
This success is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our band students. Despite starting with only about 12 students last year, the Concert Band has grown to include over 60 members, a testament to their commitment and passion for music. Their efforts, practicing morning and afternoon, have truly paid off, leading to a significant improvement in their musical abilities.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Band Parents for their unwavering support, encouraging our musicians to continue playing and practicing. Additionally, we are grateful to our administration at KHS for their support in our efforts to become a top-ranking Concert Band.
Our success would not have been possible without the guidance and expertise of our outstanding music teachers, Mr. Caravella, Mr. Pammar, Ms. Chen, and Ms. Gonzalez. Their dedication to our students' musical development has been instrumental in our achievements.
Finally, we would like to express our deepest appreciation to Ms. Astrella, our Visual and Performing Arts Supervisor. Her tireless efforts and commitment to excellence have provided invaluable support to the Visual and Performing Arts department, ensuring that our students have access to the very best resources and opportunities.

The Intro to Law Mock Trial which was conducted in the media center from April 23rd to April 29th during 2nd and 5th periods. This year's mock trial case was State of NJ v. Charlie Quinn, who faced one charge of "Killing an animal used by a law enforcement agency or search and rescue dog". The charge could have been plead to a lesser offense of "Needlessly Killing of a Living Animal." The final verdict was NOT GUILTY on the charge of killing an animal used by law enforcement, but GUILTY on the lesser offence of "Needlessly Killing of a Living Animal". Ms. Laquitano and myself evaluated the performance of period 2 and period 5 mock trials, utilizing a competition rubric and a score sheet. The final result of the mock trial competition: Period 2 Winner (361pts) and Period 5 (323pts) 2nd place

Two of Melody Larossa’s Introduction to Engineering Design students placed third in the Technology Student Association (TSA) NJ state board game design competition! 🏆 Glenda Arenas and Julissa Montes Martinez created the concept for the game, Jurassic Breakout, and designed the physical packaging, game board, pieces and instructions. They used a combination of materials to create the game, including 3D designed and printed pieces. Glenda and Julissa dedicated a lot of time to the project and came up with a clever and fun game. We are very proud of them.
On May 1, the Success students went to Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center. During this field trip, students experienced an immersion of STEM and Sports, learning about the physics of baseball, as well as how mathematics and statistics permeate the athletic experience. Not only that, but the students had the opportunity to use radar & laser technology to physically demonstrate concepts like momentum and the kinetic energy as they pertain to baseball! They calculated their own physical “strides” just like professional pitchers do, and learned how science and math are intricately linked to athletic performance. Special thanks to Sonia Mendes and our chaperones for a fantastic day, and shout out to Jenny Pollack of the Yoga Berra Museum for her interactive presentation.
KHS would like to share the link below for an upcoming community event that hopefully will interest children in grades 7 -12. The motivational guest speaker, Craig Jandoli is a highly regarded speaker and regular speaker at the annual Youth Peer Leadership State Conference hosted by the State Elks Association. We are fortunate to be able to schedule Craig to speak to the community, especially the engagement of the teen youth population in Kearny. Kearny is hosting the event in an effort to bring awareness to the community about mental health, wellness and opioid overdose awareness and education.

Last week Mr. Vegas physics students were challenged to design a container that would be able to keep a chicken egg intact after a fall from 1 meter, 2 meters, and finally from the 4th floor window. This was part of a unit on the momentum-impulse theorem and applications of Newton's Laws. Students did research and then built designs within the limited supply constraints: 10 sheets of computer paper, 10 popsicle sticks, 1 m of string and 1 m of tape. Almost all the groups made it through the 1 meter drop, and more than half were successful at 2 meters. But in the end only three groups managed to survive the drop from the fourth floor window. Giselle Giron Cholotio built a container with a parachute similar to ones used in military air drops. Litzy Rosas and Ricardo Guitierrez used reinforced padding similar to a Mars lander, and Emrah Jadic built a lightweight pyramidal structure that emulated the crumple zones of a car.
