The KHS science department celebrated Mole Day as part of National Chemistry Week. A Mole in chemistry is used to count very tiny atoms using Avogadro's Number, about 600 billion trillions or 6 times 10 to the 23rd power (thank you Mr. Vega!) to get masses we can study in the lab.

A representative from Fairleigh Dickinson University visited Kearny High School to share valuable information about the many opportunities available to our students. During the visit, the representative highlighted unique programs such as Latino Promise and the bilingual Hacer program, both designed to support and empower Latino and non-Latino students in their pursuit of higher education. In addition, the presentation covered a wide range of topics including academic programs, campus life, and scholarship opportunities, giving our students a clear picture of what FDU has to offer as they plan their college journeys.

On October 21st, former student Ravyn Mejias came in to speak to the Medical students regarding her experiences in nursing school. Ravyn was a standout student in KHS for four years and is now a sophomore at Felician College. She is in the honors nursing program and was happy to come back and share all of her experiences thus far with the current medical students. Ravyn presented an informative power point with tips for studying and the importance of time-management skills. She listed the coursework and what she thought was important as a high school student to prepare for nursing school. She also spoke about the characteristics/traits that embody a healthcare professional and the expectations of the nursing professors. The students were totally engaged and had many questions to ask the former student who once sat in the same seats they were sitting.

On October 9, the students of the SAVE and Fishing clubs were excited to receive the Eco Schools Gold Plaque for all of their amazing contributions during the 2024–2025 school year. The award was proudly presented by Dr. Roberta Hunter from NJ Audubon.
Throughout last school year, students took part in so many meaningful projects. They continued their bird-watching through Project FeederWatch, partnered with the Bergen County Audubon Society and Monmouth University, and studied the health of a nearby pond by looking at the macroinvertebrates living there. They even took a trip to the Pequest Hatchery, where they learned firsthand how to fish, water quality, and conservation.
One of the biggest highlights was the Trex Recycling Challenge. With the whole school pitching in and rallying behind the motto “1,000 Pounds for School Grounds,” students collected enough plastic to earn a recycled bench that will soon be placed on campus. They also cared for and improved the school’s garden habitat, making it a welcoming spot for both people and wildlife, such as migratory butterflies and birds.
In just one year, students showed how much of a difference they can make when they work together, proving that their energy and creativity can inspire real change for the environment.
