Kearny High School

KHS: The KHS Debate Club had its first meeting of the year on Friday September 22nd. We welcomed new and interested members, added them to our Google Classroom page and explained to them what the club is all about. We hold semi-weekly debates on various topics from controversial political issues ripped from the headlines (for example, should the U.S. have an open border policy?) to silly and simple improv debates (for example, is vanilla better than chocolate?). We also introduced new members to our club officers and advisor. Our President this year is senior Eleni Nunez, our Vice President is senior Karla Orellana, and our Secretary is junior Ashley Torres. The advisor is History teacher Jessica Laquintano. Next, students discussed which topics they would like to see in the coming weeks, and we signed up volunteers to debate and moderate those topics. We now have a month's worth of meetings planned out and hopefully lots of new members! Our next two meetings are Friday September 29th and Friday October 6th, both in room 240 after school. KHS: Our Senior Teen PEP class is working in groups to develop teamwork and create bulletin boards in all the health classrooms & in the gym. The objective is to spread the word about the topics discussed in KHS health classes & our Teen PEP program. Thank you, Mrs. Velez

KHS: KHS had four representatives of the Army, they included: Sergeant Flores; Sergeant Cruz; First Class Chavel (KHS graduate) and Private Rosario (KHS graduate). They were here for two days and spoke to our senior and our junior class. The presentation was regarding the programs and opportunities available for anyone who might be interested.

In Mrs. LaRossa's Intro to Engineering Design Projects, some of the student’s challenges were: In one challenge, students were challenged to build the tallest tower possible using spaghetti and mini marshmallows, that would support one large marshmallow. Our second challenge involved building a device out of given materials (paper cup, spoon, straws, rubber bands, paper clip) that would fling a cotton ball as far as possible.
