Congratulations to Bryan Veloso

Congratulations to Bryan Veloso on receiving an honorable mention in the national CAD Academy LEED home design competition. LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification.  The competition challenged students to create a home design that is both functional and energy efficient to meet the national standards. Bryan’s design incorporated elements of design, function and eco-friendly materials to qualify for the highest certification.  Bryan’s design was created using Archi CAD and BIM modeling software.  He is a senior in Advanced Architecture.

Lincoln School Happenings

On Saturday, February 7th, 2015 a team of teachers from Lincoln, Schuyler and Franklin, along with friends and family participated in the annual Cycle for Survival held at the Equinox in Summit, N.J.

Cycle for Survival is a charity founded with the support of Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital that raises money for rare or “orphan” cancers. These cancers when totaled comprise 50% of all cancer cases nationwide. However, until Cycle for Survival began raising money in 2007, funds for research were sorely lacking.

What makes this charity unique is that 100% of all money raised goes to cancer research. Doctors and staff at Sloan volunteer their time to the charity as do other individuals and companies. This allows all of the funds to go to research.

What started as a small event in 2007 in New Jersey raising $250,000 has blossomed into a nationwide event that raised 20 million dollars in 2014.

Lincoln School art teacher, Paul Merlo, spearheaded the effort of our “Kearny Kares” team last year while teaching at Schuyler School. We started last year with 16 participants and doubled that this year to 32 participants. Through the efforts of team members and the students in Schuyler and Lincoln schools, we have raised over $11,000 in two years. The students alone in the 2 schools through coin donations and other events donated over $4,000 in the two years.

Next year, we hope to again increase our participation number and donation amount while proudly showing that “Kearny Kares”.

Online donations will be accepted until the end of February. Please go to Cycle for Survival if you would like to support team “Kearny Kares”.

Three Time Winner!

Jillian Boyle, an eighth grade student in Lincoln Middle School, Kearny, New Jersey, knows what “writing it right” is all about.  Recently she participated in Kearny’s local VFW sponsored Patriot’s Pen national essay contest entitled, “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans”.

It began as a class assignment from her eighth grade language arts teacher, Mrs. Kathie Williams, and ended with her attending a luncheon on Saturday, February 6, 2015, there she was awarded THIRD PLACE in the state of New Jersey for her essay’s excellence.

How did she get there? First, she won second place in our local VFW’s contest.  This allowed her essay to advance to the next level of competition at the county/district competition. Here, Jillian was awarded first place!  Then her essay advanced again to compete on the state level.  That’s where Jillian was awarded THIRD PLACE!

                                   Congratulations Jillian!
