Principal Mary Costello Is The Coach Behind the Batter

It's too early for baseball but not for Mrs. Costello's batter.

With some help from faculty, friends and a penguin or two....

Mrs. Costello got things cooking. For many years Mrs. Costello  kept a watchful eye on Mr. Sprague as he flipped pancakes for the honor students in Franklin School.

Now  it's Mrs. Costello's turn at her first Principal Honor's Breakfast since taking over as Principal in Washington School. Thirteen students were honored December 10th at a pancake breakfast.

Mr. Dan Costello was on hand to give Mary any help she needed. But, with years of flipping with Mr. Sprague, Mrs. Costello knew what was cooking and Dan pitched in wherever needed.

Here we see Mr. Costello checking out the sterno heaters that will keep the hundreds of pancakes prepared by Mrs. Costello nice and warm for the students, their parents, the entire Washington School faculty and invited guests.

In spite of her many years of flipping with Mr. Sprague, her first hot cake looked like it had a handle on it. But by pancake number four, seen here being created, Mrs. Costello had a handle on preparing the hot cakes for her first time without Mr. Sprague.

With perfect timing, Mrs. Costello turned the pancakes over to reveal a golden brown  and receive a rousing round of applause.

Now for the real test to see if  Mrs. Costello's pancakes made the grade. Ms. Bevon Walsh, a 7th grade teacher in Washington School, was first in line to critique the pancakes. Bevon was a 1993 graduate from Franklin School and, being an honor student in junior high, she enjoyed many, many pancakes prepared by Mr. Sprague and Mrs. Costello. Her verdict...

The same as the teachers, parents, students and guests....A+ for Mrs. Costello. Perhaps it was she and not Mr. Sprague who was responsible for the great pancakes at Franklin School. Although, in a related story, Mr. Sprague seems to have done OK with his Principal honor's breakfast a few weeks ago. Cick here to learn more about that breakfast. Dr. Boyd recognized the honor students at the breakfast by asking them to stand for a round of applause.

Guidance Counselor Ms. Joan Fealey and teacher Elaine Carey enjoyed the pancakes.

As did the many guests, teachers, parents and students. Congratulations Mrs. Costello. From all accounts, everyone flipped over your pancakes.
