College Athletes, Teachers and Business Leaders Team Up for Reading

Volunteers from the St. Peter’s College Women’s Softball Team spend Tuesdays after school reading to the first and second graders in Washington School as part of the Family Literacy “Let’s Read Together” initiative.  Reading Coach Marie Ortega from the NJ Department of Education and Patricia White, Washington's 2003 Teacher of the Year provided an overview of the components of balanced literacy while teachers practiced hands on applications.    

Diane Davis, Director of Curriculum and Testing, presented a literacy framework at an afternoon professional development workshop.

Rini Tandjiria and Jonathan Galan, Financial Specialists for the Wachovia Kearny Financial Center, 175 Passaic Avenue, Kearny, NJ, spent an afternoon reading to the children in Washington School.

 The children not only received an afternoon of reading and storytelling but also received a Wachovia commemorative coin for their participation.
