A Message from the Superintendent of Schools

It’s summertime, summertime, some, some summertime. And as the song says, “it’s time for fun and time for thrills.” And it’s time for the Kearny School District to roll out our summer activities for our students from Pre-K to 12th grade.

This summer, the Passaic Educational Services Commission will offer courses for high school and elementary school students. The courses will be offered in KHS beginning June 29th. Full year and half year courses include: Math, Language Arts , Science, Social Studies, Health, Physical Education, ESL and HSPA training.

At Washington School, the A.C.E. Program will offer courses to improve literacy through technology.

This year Kearny will offer summer enrichment classes to junior high school students and those children in grades 4 - 5 - 6.

These classes will provide students with an opportunity to get a head start on their summer reading and KEDS packets. Students will meet with a teacher to discuss and work on their summer requirements once a week during the month of July. In order to make this opportunity easily available to students in the six elementary schools, three locations and days were offered. Incoming 5th and 6th grade students of Title I schools will have instructional classes for the purpose of infusing technology into the areas of math, reading and writing.

School Based Youth Services offers their very successful “Ticket to Success” program in Washington School.  This program, in conjunction with the YMWCA and the 21st Century program will be sponsoring free summer day camp for students who qualify. The camp will be offered at Washington School each day from 8:00 AM until 12:30 PM. The camp will have arts & crafts, singing groups, recreational activities and fun games for the students to enjoy.

A one-week, overnight summer camp experience will be offered to young people who qualify at Camp Linwood McDonald. Offered through the YMWCA in conjunction with School Based Youth Services and the 21st Century grant, this program will give children in the 4th-8th grade an opportunity enjoy boating, swimming, hiking, camp fire sing-a-longs, sports and recreational activities.

Incoming freshmen to KHS will have an opportunity to enjoy the SBYS Transition program. The students will be given an orientation of the high school, participate in social activities and go on field trips during the summer.

For the high school students, there will be Band Camp where students spend time perfecting their skills for half-time shows and band competitions in the Fall. Our cheerleaders will attend a summer camp at Rutgers as well as our own summer camp hosted in the high school.  Members of the SAAD Club will be attending a National Convention in Washington, DC.

For our soccer players there will be both a boys and girls soccer camp from 3rd - 12th grade.  To help our athletes get in shape and for students who want to look good on the beach, the weight room in the high school will be open for boys and girls in the 7th to 12th grade.  A summer football conditioning and agility program will be available for all players in grades 9 through 12. A summer track program for elementary and high school students is an option.

If a student enjoys summer competition as well as summer fun, there will be a summer basketball and soccer league for boys and girls in the junior and senior high schools.  A summer soccer festival is also planned.
