International Society of Poets Honors Lincoln 7th Grader

Francis Guzman was worried about her family in Portugal and Venezuela as the World Trade Center came under attack last year. Like so many children who witnessed the attack, Francis felt she needed to do something to make things better, for herself, her friends and her family.

Francis Guzman shows Paul Reitemeyer, Principal of Lincoln School, her trophy and poem.

Francis, whose favorite subject is mathematics, also likes writing, especially poetry. Trying to make some sense out of why so many people died, Francis, in just under an hour, wrote a poem which she titled “Don’t Tell Me Why.”  Francis, being very computer literate, was searching the Internet for other poems and went to www.poetry.com. She learned of a contest being sponsored by the International Society of Poets and she submitted her poem to the International Society of Poets. On August 25, 2002 , Francis received a letter from the Society announcing that she won the contest and was invited to a ceremony in Washington , DC..
