School Based Youth Services Program

@ Kearny High School

Receives $482,158

21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant

The New Jersey Department of Education, Office of Program Support Services, awarded School Based Youth Services Program @ KHS $482,158 for each of the next five years.  This grant will provide services for 160 elementary school students and 40 high school students in an after-school program to be located at Washington School and Kearny High School.  This program is expected to begin Tuesday, September 28, 2004.

The School Based Youth Services Program, along with their partners, have joined to create “TICKET-TO-SUCCESS”. This partnership team will provide high quality, innovative, and effective learning opportunities for diverse student and adult populations in safe and supportive environments to increase student achievement, family literacy, capacity building, and successful development of the whole child.

The 21st CCLC Program is a key component of President Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act.  It is an opportunity for students and their families to continue to learn new skills and discover new abilities after the school day has ended.

The focus of this program, re-authorized under Title IV, Part B, of the No Child Left Behind Act, is to provide expanded academic enrichment opportunities for children with low performing scores.  Tutorial services and academic enrichment activities are designed to help students meet local and state academic standards in subjects such as reading and math.  In addition 21st CCLC programs provide youth development activities, drug and violence prevention programs, technology education programs, art and recreation programs, counseling and character education to enhance the academic component of the program.

According to grant writers Jeannie MacConchie, Director and Adele Higgins, Employment Specialist, at SBYSP, “Community learning centers reinforce and support classroom learning and can make a significant difference in the lives of children and families.”

Washington School will house the elementary component that will serve 160 students from all 6 elementary schools, grades 4 – 8.  Hours of operation will be Monday thru Friday, 3:15 to 6:15.  Transportation will be provided for those students needed to be transported to and from the site.

Kearny High School will target 40 students to participate in the program.  Hours of operation will be 2:45 – 5:45.  Participating students are eligible to receive course credit by meeting all program requirements.

Participating parents of those children enrolled in the program are eligible to attend classes at the Kearny High School Adult School program.

Summer 2005 will provide day camp and weeklong camp experiences for students.  (Further information will be available at registration)

Look for our announcement for program requirements and registration dates posted on our web site at Kearnyschools.com and in this newspaper next week.
