What is the GATE Program?
The GATE Program is a pullout program for students in grades 3 through 6 who meet the criteria for the Gifted & Talented Program.
How are students identified for the GATE Program?
Students are identified in a threefold process which consists of National Testing Scores (NJ ASK or Terranova), a teacher observation form, & completion of the SAGES Survey for Gifted Students.
Who is admitted?
After all steps of the threefold process are completed, the students’ scores are ranked. In the 3rd grade, the top 30 students with the highest rankings are asked to enter the program. In grades 4 – 6, the number of empty spots depends on how many students from the previous year return. There are 30 spots per grade level.
Once my child is accepted, is he/she guaranteed a spot?
Yes, once your child is accepted, he/she is secured a spot in the program until he/she reaches 6th grade. However, if a student quits or declines admittance to the program, his/her spot is forfeited for the future.
What if a child is denied entrance to the program?
Students that aren’t asked to be part of the program have their ranking saved until they exit 6th grade. Should an opening arise, they will be contacted. They are not tested again being it’s the same test every year.
Where is the program held?
The program is located at Washington School. Lincoln, Franklin, & Schuyler schools attend the morning program, from 9:30 am – 11:30 am. Washington, Garfield, & Roosevelt schools attend the afternoon program, from 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm. Students are picked up and dropped off at Washington School by district buses.
What does my child learn at GATE?
Each grade has it’s own separate GATE curriculum, consisting of topics and lessons that span every subject area.
Who is the GATE Teacher?
The GATE Teacher is Kimberly Testa, from Washington School.
How are GATE students evaluated?
Students receive progress reports for each marking period to show their progress.
