Once again the staff and students in the Kearny school system finished another successful holiday season gathering toys for the annual Marine Corps toy collection. As soon as the call went out for donations, the toys started coming in. Notices about the program were sent to all building administrators in the Kearny district right before Thanksgiving asking students, teachers and staff for new, unwrapped toys. A pick up was arranged for the week before Christmas and the toys were then taken for distribution to the West Hudson Detachment of the Marine Corps League on Belgrove Drive in Kearny.
This was the seventh year in a row that Kearny Schools participated in the toy program so many people in the district were ready to give when they were notified that the collection had begun. Students and teachers from Franklin School as well as Board of Education and Superintendent's Office employees literally filled twenty boxes and bags with toys and stuffed animals. Many toys were hand delivered by students wanting to help another kid out. Schuyler and Roosevelt Schools did their usual tremendous job of giving. Washington School added to the donations with a wonderful effort and the High School also contributed. Special thanks again go to Tom MacFie and Ron for their cooperation and assistance in getting the toys picked up and delivered to the Marine House. The toys were placed into the capable hands of the Semper Fi Santa’s who sorted and readied them for distribution to needy families. The efforts of the students and staff of Kearny District helped make the holidays shine for children who often have to go with out some of the simple things that most of us take for granted.
