In addition to the D.A.R.E. program for the school district's fifth graders taught by Kearny Police Officer Marc McCaffrey (2nd from left) and, in addition to Kearny Police Officer Angelo Palagano,(right) assigned to the high school full-time, Kearny Police Chief John Dowie informed School Superintendent Robert P. Mooney that the Kearny Police Department received a grant to enhance the police presence in the schools and to provide further instruction to the students about safety and security.
The Kearny Police Department received a grant from the Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, for a special program titled "COPS in our Schools: Keeping our Kids Safe". As part of this grant Police Officer Damon Pein (pronounced Pine) (left) will be assigned to our junior schools on a full time basis.
The Kearny Police Department and the Kearny Public Schools share the mutual interest of safety, security and comfort for our children and staff. In keeping with these goals "COPS in our Schools" (CIS Program) is designed to support the following initiatives:
. Vigilant and rigorous inspections of all security-related issues
. Trust-building between police and students through education and dialogue
. Collaboration with parents and the Kearny Police Department
. Communication between professional staff and the police to enhance security
The "COPS in our Schools Program" requires flexible scheduling to ensure maximum effectiveness. Officer Pein will be available to the schools as needed. His basic schedule will be as follows:
. Monday - Lincoln
. Tuesday - Schuyler School
. Wednesday - Washington
. Thursday - Franklin School
. Friday - All Junior Schools
The Kearny Board of Education and members of our school community extend its thanks and appreciation to the Kearny Police Department for making our schools a safe, secure and comfortable environment for our children, parents and staff.
