GENERAL INFORMATION

We welcome all residents of Kearny and neighboring communities to enroll in the various courses offered here at Kearny Adult School. The courses we are offering are designed to meet the needs and interests of the adults of the community.

TUITION - Each course will have the fee listed within the course description.

REGISTRATION - You are urged to register by mail using the form that is within this bulletin. All checks or money orders should be made payable to Kearny Adult School. The form and your payment should be mailed to Kearny High School, 336 Devon Street, Kearny, NJ 07032 attention Mr. William J. Gaydos. Students are to pick up their receipts in the Main Office on the first day of class.

If you wish to register in person, you may do so by coming to Kearny High School on January 28, 29, and 30 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Students should be prepared to pay in full for the courses they choose. Payment in cash, check or money order, only.

REFUND POLICY - Tuition will only be refunded for the following reasons: teacher cancellation, insufficient enrollment, up to two weeks into the semester if the student is not interested in the class.

LOCATION - All classes will be held at Kearny High School unless otherwise noted in our bulletin. Students are expected to enter the school by the main entrance which is located on Devon Street.

CLASSES - All classes will be meeting on Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays. They will begin at 7:00 pm and will end at 9:00 pm unless otherwise noted. All classes will meet for ten evenings unless otherwise noted.

SMOKING - There will be absolutely NO SMOKING in the school building.

DAYS - Please note the day of the week of the course you are taking and the first night of the course - we do offer one and two night courses. Please read the bulletin for information as to the day that your course will meet.

ROOMS - Room assignments will be listed in the front hall of Kearny High School on the first meeting night of each class. School personnel will be available to help you find the room in which your course will be offered.

INCLEMENT WEATHER - As a general rule, if there is school during the day, we will normally have school at night. If there are any unusual problems with weather, please call 201-991-4141.

PARKING - There are limited parking spaces in the parking lot across the street from Kearny High School. Please park in the spaces available. If all spots are taken, please make use of the legal parking spaces on the streets around Kearny High School.

Hudson County Community College Fall 2007

Earn College Credits at Kearny High School

Hudson County Community College (HCCC) is a two-year community college offering courses leading to certificates or associate's degrees in areas such as Allied Health, Business, Computer Sciences, Culinary Arts, Education, Engineering Sciences/Technologies, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. The degrees prepare graduates for immediate employment or transfer to a baccalaureate program at a four-year institution.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

ACC 121 Principles of Accounting I (4 credits) Previous accounting knowledge is not required. The course covers the fundamental accounting principles from analyzing and recording procedures to the preparation of financial statements and the reporting of financial information to users. Emphasis is placed on service and merchandise business operations of a sole proprietorship. Prerequisite: Exit CPT in Math and Algebra.

BIO 201 Practical Nutrition (3 Credits) Stresses the application of Nutritional principles to daily health maintenance and conditions that require special diet management.  This course is designed for Nursing and Health Related or Culinary Arts/Hospitality Management programs.

CSC 100 Introduction to Computers & Computing (3 credits) Introduces beginning students to computers. Includes information processing, file management, spreadsheets, graphics and introduction to programming in BASIC. Other topics include history of computers, computer hardware and software and the impact of computers on society. (This course may not be used for credit by computer science and data processing majors). 2 Lecture hours, 2 Lab Hours.

ENG 101 College Composition I (3 credits) Offers instruction in essay writing. While some attention is given to common grammatical problems, the course focuses primarily on the writing process. Students are taught prewriting, composing, and editing techniques through practical demonstrations, in-class exercises, and analysis of readings in expository prose. NOTE: Students completing ENG 101 must take the Writing Proficiency Test. Passing this test is a requirement for passing the course. Students scoring less than "8" on the Writing Placement Test must take ENG 101 with ENG 096

ENG 112 Speech (3 credits) Teaches the oral communication skills students need in order to accomplish their college and career goals. All students address the class in talks designed to inform, persuade, and instruct. They also explore interviewing strategies; giving and using feedback; group discussion rules and roles; and the impact of culture, gender, and politics on communication. Students submit weekly logs chronicling their responses to reading and films as well as their own selected speaking/listening experience. (Formerly ENG 301)  

HIS 210 (3 Credits)  This course examines the history of Western Civilization from ancient times to about 1400.  It covers the development of Greek, Roman, Medieval, and early modern civilizations including Africa and Asia.  Topics that will be discussed include:  the first world religions, the first cities, the origins of democracy and many other crucial beginnings will be explored.  The focus will shift from the county to country, but the subject will always remain the same: the rise of the West in a global perspective.  Prerequisite: Exit CPT in Basic Math and Algebra.

MAT 100 College Algebra (3 Credits)  The essentials of college Algebra.  Topics include polynomials, first degree equations, word problems, graphing, systems of linear equation, factoring, exponents, quadratic equations, matrices, and  radicals.  Prerequisite:  Exit CPT in Basic Math and Algebra.

MUS 101 Introduction to Music (3 Credits) This course is designed to develop an appreciation of music from the Western classical and popular traditions to selected styles form other parts of the world.  Students are also introduced to the fundamental of music theory.  NOTE:  Students must have a CD player.  CO-Requisite:  ENG 101.

PSY 101 Introduction to Psychology (3 Credits) This course is designed to present an overview of psychology.  As an introduction to the field, students learn current perspectives and the methods used in psychology today.  They become familiar with problems and general findings in the processes of sensation, perception, learning and memory, and consider issues related language, thought, and intelligence.  They focus, too, on understanding the connections between emotions, stress, and health, and examine current theories in developmental, personality, and abnormal psychology.  Students are encouraged to apply psychological principles to personal and social concerns.
