JOB DESCRIPTION
DIRECTOR OF GUIDANCE
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Possession of a standard New Jersey Director of Student Personnel Service Certificate.
2. Hold a minimum of a Master’s Degree in guidance and counseling.
3. Evidence of successful potential as demonstrated in prior experiences, references and interviews.
REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools or designee
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The guidance director shall plan, organize, interpret, evaluate and administer the guidance and counseling program in consultation with the administration and in accordance with the goals and philosophy developed by the professional staff.
FUNCTION OF THE POSITION: (Duties and Responsibilities)
1. Comply with all applicable school rules and regulations, Board Policy, and NJ State Department regulations relative to guidance services.
2. Supervise, observe and evaluate the activities of the counselors and counseling clerks in the district.
3. Participate in interviewing and consideration of counselor and clerk candidates in the counseling department.
4. Act as a resource person and consultant to counselors, teaching staff, department chairpersons and administrators on counseling and guidance matters.
5. Participate in and assume leadership, where possible, in the development or curriculum innovations.
6. Arrange for inventorying, ordering, storing necessary and appropriate equipment, supplies and reference materials needed by the counseling staff.

7. Coordinate the home tutoring program for the high school.
8. Provide in-service training for counselors and other staff members relative to guidance functions, activities and programs. Provide professional books/materials.
9. Encourage counselors to grow professionally by attending professional conferences/workshops; explore different counseling techniques.
10. Integrate and coordinate guidance services with other pupil personnel services and the instructional programs.
11. Develop a professionally sound philosophy of guidance services, guidance functions, activities and programs.
12. Organize, administer, and coordinate all phases of the information service to include securing, reviewing, organizing and disseminating information of all types concerning occupational, educational and personal-social dimensions to students, parents, professional staff and community.
13. Organize, administer and coordinate all phases of the assessment service to include collecting, evaluating, recording, storing and utilizing the following information: permanent record, cumulative folder, test performance record, and other significant reports as required by the Superintendent or designee.
14. Organize, administer, and coordinate all phases of the counseling service to include: student assignment to counselors, periodic and systematic individual and group counseling to all students.
15. At the high school level organize, administer and coordinate all phases of the placement of students in post-secondary training or schooling, and referral to job placement.
16. Organize, administer, and coordinate all phases of the follow-up service to include follow-up studies of graduates.
17. Conduct a continuing evaluation of the guidance activities and an annual review of the effectiveness of the program.
18. Perform other duties assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
