POLICY

 

 

                                                JOB DESCRIPTION

                        ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

 

 

The Assistant Superintendent of Schools is directly responsible to the Superintendent of Schools.  He/she shall assist the Superintendent with the general operation and supervision of the schools of the town of Kearny.

 

 

DUTIES:

 

  1. The Assistant Superintendent of Schools shall attend all Board meetings unless excused by the Superintendent or the Board President.

 

  1. The Assistant Superintendent shall assume the responsibility and authority of the school district in the absence of the Superintendent.

 

  1. The Assistant Superintendent will carry out the functions designated to him/her by the Superintendent.

 

  1. When the Superintendent and/or Board of Education see a need for curriculum change, it will be the function of the Assistant Superintendent to establish a systematic method of study, evaluation and communication.

 

The Assistant Superintendent will establish the following stages of development in curriculum change:

 

a.                  Identification of a particular need to change;

b.                  Study alternate proposals for change;

c.                   Selection of proposed change;

d.                  Design a pilot study;

e.                  Appraise data collected from pilot study;

f.                    Continuous study by all of the staff who are involved;

g.                  Comprehensive evaluation to determine the need for the change;

h.                  Implement action.

  1. The Assistant Superintendent will assist the Superintendent and Board of Education in establishing priorities for curriculum planning.

 

  1. The Assistant Superintendent will assist the Superintendent in the following areas:

 

a.                  The improvement in coordination and cooperation between the

elementary and secondary programs.

 

b.                  He/she will assist the Superintendent in the organization of

in-service programs for the purpose of improving instruction.

                 

c.                   Assist in the screening of full-time and substitute teachers who are

seeking employment.

 

d.                  Assist the Superintendent and the Board of Education during

negotiations as a consultant but not as a negotiator.
